'Steps taken to preserve Chameli House'
The Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (Cirdap) said steps have already been taken to preserve the Chameli House, which has been housing its headquarters since 1984.
It made the claim in a press statement as some 91 eminent personalities recently urged the caretaker government to take necessary measures to preserve the historic Chameli House.
In the statement, Cirdap said the Public Works Department (PWD) in 1998 recommended evacuation of the first floor of the Chameli House, the roof of which was about to collapse. It remained unused until the government restored it in 2006 paying special attention to preserve all its essential architectural features in every possible manner.
The construction of the six-storied Cirdap International Centre (CIC) will be carried out in the area covered by tin-sheds that were there for over 25 years, it added.
"The Ministry of LGRD&C approved the proposal for construction of the CIC. While preparing the architectural design of the CIC, the Department of Architecture of the government paid special attention to preserve the beauty, architectural character and historical importance of the site, and the PWD is taking necessary steps to construct the CIC on the basis of this design," said the press release signed by KAS Dayananda, director, information and communication division of Cirdap.
The press release also said the garden area of Chameli House remains well-preserved and it is one of the best preserved beautiful gardens in Dhaka city with many old trees.
On February 22, some 91 eminent personalities, including poets, litterateurs, journalists and educationists, called on the government to take steps to stop the construction work of the six-storied building, erect iron fences after removing the boundary wall and revive the old name of 'Chameri House' in order to preserve the historic site.
