The TV commercial industry at the moment
Syed Apon Ahsan is one of the busiest TV commercial (TVC) makers of the country. Many TVCs made by Apon for Aarong, RC Cola and Cosmos brands have won appreciation. Each year he directs around 10 TVCs.
Commenting on his commercials, Apon said, “Prior to making the film, I do some surveys based on the consumers' demands. I always prefer teamwork. I prefer jingle-based commercials to story-based ones, as people in our country love music. Moreover, people get bored watching story-based commercials after a certain period of time.”
On the current state of TVC making, Apon said, “It's a challenging and expanding industry with a lot of potentials.'
Is social commitment reflected in the TVCs? Apon said, “Social commitment is expected in every sector of life. But, do we see a proper reflection? Our agency, Expressions Limited, makes one commercial with a social message for free every year. This year we made a commercial on malaria.”
On the standards of models in the country, Apon said, “The models in Bangladesh are not properly trained. They believe that a 'pretty face' and 'good physique' are the basic requirements to be a model, which is not true.
“The most important feature of a model is his/her ability to present an idea in a brief period. Interestingly most of the models in the country do not concentrate on this issue,” he added.
Apon is the director (Operation, Strategic Planning and Film Planning) of Expressions Limited. Going back to his early days, he said, “Soon after completing my education from University of Dhaka, I joined Expressions Limited in client servicing. Initially I used to contribute to conceptualisation/development of TVCs. Subsequently, I began directing the commercials.”
Besides making TVCs, Apon has been active in theatre since 1993. He has acted in several popular productions such as Madhobi, Meraj Fakirer Maa, Chhoy Beharar Palki and Golap Bagan. Moreover, he is a recitor. He is a member of recitation troupe Swanon.
Apon plans to emerge as a feature film director. He said, “I believe, film making is the most challenging and interesting art form.”
