Parma appoint Cuper
Argentine Hector Cuper will be the new coach of Parma, the club's president Tommaso Ghirardi said on Tuesday.
Parma fired Domenico di Carlo, who had been in charge since the start of the season, on Monday with the team sitting in 17th place in the 20-team Serie A table and having won only five times in 27 league matches this season.
Cuper has previously coached in Italy, taking the helm at Inter Milan from 2001 to 2003 and he even came within a whisker of lifting the Scudetto crown in 2002 but a 4-2 defeat to Lazio on the final day of the season allowed Juventus to snatch the title.
The 52-year-old does have a fine pedigree, though, guiding little Mallorca to the final of the Spanish Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup in successive seasons before then steering Valencia to two successive Champions League finals.
"It's as good as sealed. Cuper will arrive this afternoon in Italy and we'll sign a contract tonight," said Ghirardi.
Cuper last worked in Spain at Real Betis having returned to Mallorca, and saved them from relegation, following his Inter experience.
However, despite all his success, the former Argentina international defender has never actually won a trophy in management.
"I chose an experienced coach because he can help us to quickly get out of this mess," added Ghirardi.
Parma are on 18 points, the same number as Empoli in 18th place and a relegation position.
The club, former UEFA Cup winners, made a similar move last season, firing Stefano Pioli and replacing him with Claudio Ranieri, now in charge of Juventus, with a notable upturn in fortunes resulting from the change.
Under Ranieri they lost only three of their last 16 matches.
