Man gets life for killing wife in Thakurgaon
A court here has sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for killing his wife at Sonapatila village in Sadar upazila in 2006.
The convict is Abu Sufian alias Labu Chowdhury, 45, son of late Raisul Haque of the village.
District and Sessions Judge Md. Habibur Rahman handed down the verdict in a crowded court room in presence of the accused on Tuesday.
The court also fined him Tk. 5,000, in default, to suffer six months more in jail.
The court on another count further sentenced him to three years rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk.1,000, in default, to suffer one month more in jail.
According to the prosecution, Abu Sufian married Monwara Begum in 1993. Monwara's family gave him Tk. 2.5 lakh, a computer, a freeze and a suzuki motorbike after a few months as dowry.
After a few years of marriage, Sufian allegedly developed an illicit relationship with a local woman that led to frequent quarrel between the couple.
At a stage of their quarrel, on 12 January in 2006, Abu Sufian set his wife on fire at his house, leaving her dead. Later the family members circulated the matter as a case of suicide.
On 15 January, victim's brother filed a murder case with Thakurgaon police station accusing Abu Sufian and a woman.
The court, however, acquitted the woman as the allegation against her could not be proved.
