Jamaat-Shibir clash with cops in Rajshahi
At least 30 people were injured while 24 Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists, who clashed with police and tried to bring out processions, were arrested yesterday.
Our Rajshahi correspondent reports: At least 20 people were injured, six with bullet wounds, and 10 activists arrested while clashing with police on a stretch from Talaimari to Alupotty on Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway.
Of those with bullet wounds, one Abdus Salam, 22, is a pedestrian while Shibir men claimed that the rest were Jamaat-Shibir activists.
The clash erupted when police intercepted 500 activists, under a “Sammilito Olama Mashayek Parishad†banner, barricading the highway at Talaimari Bazar around 7:00pm.
Earlier around 2:30pm, 10 people, including a policeman, were injured while 10 activists were arrested in another clash in Kajirganj area. The activists, under the same banner, attacked police with brick chips and three cocktails.
In both clashes, police fired over 133 live rounds, rubber bullets, teargas shells and sound grenades, prompting the activists to flee.
Our Dinajpur correspondent reports: Four activists were arrested while trying to bring out a procession from Nimtola intersection in Dinajpur town. Our Chittagong correspondent reports: About 50 activists brought out a sudden procession in Kapashgola area of Chittagong city around 5:30pm and fled on seeing law enforcers.
