Robbers loot Tk 83 lakh
Criminals snatched a trunk containing over Tk 83 lakh in cash from the staff of a security company at Green Road-Panthapath intersection in the capital in the wee hours yesterday.
Around 12 robbers attacked the employees of Ornate Logistics, a cash carrying company, when they were coming out of an ATM booth after loading the ATM with money.
The robbers around 1:40am arrived on a microbus and snatched a trunk from them containing Tk 83,04,500 before fleeing the scene.
"Our trunk contained Tk 1 crore out of which we loaded Tk 20 lakh into the ATM and took Tk 304,500 from the booth," Shakhawat Hossain, deputy assistant manager of Ornate Logistics (ATM Management) said.
Their armed escort fired twice but no one was hit, he added.
Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd has over 2,300 ATM booths across the country and Ornate is responsible for filling the machines with cash every day, said Abul Kashem Mohammad Shirin, deputy managing director of DBBL.
“Ornate takes around Tk 20 crore cash from the bank every morning. It then sorts out the cash before loading it into the ATMs,†Shirin said.
As per contract agreement, Ornate would pay back the looted money to the bank, he added.
Police detained five employees of the logistics company for interrogation including executive Shafiqul Haq, senior executive Abdur Rouf Khan, microbus driver Anwar Hossain, security guard Moshiur Rahman, and armed escort Shukhranjan Sikder.
A case has been filed with Kalabagan Police Station in this regard, police said.
