Farashganj off on a winning note

Farashganj Sporting Club's bid to return to top tier football got off on a winning note as they handed a lone-goal defeat to Chittagong Abahani in the opening match of the Premier Bank Bangladesh Championship League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
Pintu Das struck the all-important goal in the 54th minute for Farashganj SC, who were relegated to the second-tier of the professional football league last season.
The old Dhaka outfit played attacking football from the outset and launched the first attack in the third minute but Chittagong Abahani goalkeeper Salimullah dived to his right to thwart a decent effort from midfielder Nasiruddin.
Farashganj SC goalkeeper Shahan Shah too showed his mettle by foiling a placing shot from opposition striker Ismail Jahed in the tenth minute before
Farshganj earned a penalty in the 54th minute and the shot from Zahurul Islam was only half-stopped by the Abahani goalkeeper Salimulla, but Pintu was there to punce on the rebound and he slotted the back right at the back of the net.
Earlier, State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad Ali Sarker declared the eight-team league open where BFF's senior vice-president Abdus Salam Murshedy and sponsors Premier Bank's officials were also present.
