BCL activists assault IU proctor
Activists of Kushtia Islamic University (IU) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), a pro-Awami League student organisation, assaulted the university's Proctor Prof Jahangir Hossain yesterday.
Campus sources said a group of BCL activists of Bangabandhu Hall unit brought out a procession on the campus at about 11:30am demanding the highest punishment for the war criminals during the Liberation War of 1971.
The BCL men also locked the university's main gate and staged a rally.
Later, pro-Jamaat student organisatoin Islami Chhatra Shibir of the unit staged a counter rally around 12:30pm demanding immediate cancellation of the war crimes tribunals.
The proctor took a position at the main entrance to check any untoward incident.
BCL activists Abu Zar Gifari Al Gaffar and Asikur Rahman Japan asked the proctor to halt the rally staged by the Shibir.
“The Chhatra League men attacked me when I told them that I am looking into the matter,†Prof Jahangir said.
The BCL activists beat up the proctor and knocked him down, the sources added.
Admitting the fact, Gaffar said, “Some Chhatra League activists showed unruly behaviour to the proctor and we regret the matter.â€
Vice Chancellor Prof Abdul Hakim Sarkar said the crisis has been resolved through a meeting with the BCL men in the evening.
