Theft of only 8 cords from hundreds unbelievable

Says DIG, demands recounting

The deputy inspector general (DIG) of police in Rangpur Region yesterday questioned the three-member probe team's report about the stealing incident at the highly secured explosives storehouse of Madhypara Granite Mining Company Ltd (MGMCL).
In the report submitted on Wednesday, the MGMCL probe team headed by Mir Md Abdul Hannan, GM (Marketing) of the company, said that eight non-electric copper cords went missing from the storehouse where two locks were found broken on Tuesday morning.
"It is unbelievable that the thieves took only eight pieces of non-electric copper cords from a packet of 600 pieces after breaking two locks. It does not seem to be an ordinary stealing," said Iqbal Bahar, DIG of police in Rangpur, who visited the mine site yesterday.
"I want recounting of the items of the explosives store in presence of a magistrate and army and police teams," he said.
During the visit from 10:40am to around 1:00pm, the DIG talked with officials, employees, miners and ansar members at the site.
Earlier Md Moinul Islam, superintendent of police of Dinajpur, hinted that the officials and staff were allegedly involved with the incident.
Md AM Mostafa Ferdowsee, DGM (Administration) of MGMCL, filed a case with Parbatipur police station on Wednesday night in connection with stealing incident at the explosives store of the mining company.
"Unidentified miscreants entered the mine's explosives warehouse anytime Monday and committed the stealing. On Tuesday morning the officials and miners found two of the four locks of the store broken," goes the case statement.
The case was handed over to Directive Branch and Md Redwanur Rahim, an officer in charge, has been made the investigation officer (IO) of the case.
The IO yesterday called nine people including two officers of MGMCL and four Ansar members to Parbatipur Police Station and quizzed them there.
"We have got some vital information," the IO said without disclosing any information.
On Wednesday, MGMCL authorities suspended two officers in charge of security for their alleged failure in maintaining security at the place.
