3 boys die as earthen tunnel caves in
Three teenage boys died from the collapse of an earthen tunnel which they had dug up to secretly consume drugs there at Rangpur city's Mahiganj Balatali yesterday.
The deceased Limon, 17, son of Azad Mian, Shakil, 16, son of Siraj Mian, and Bappi, 15, son of Sundar Ali, were the residents of the area.
Shamim, a local, said some gamblers and drug addicts built the tunnel with straw and sticks beside a bamboo bush to hide their illegal activities like taking drugs.
The death of the three came to light when Shakil's mother started looking for her son around 11:00am as she did not find any clue to Shakil's whereabouts since the morning.
After a half-an-hour's frantic search, she traced a pair of sandals of Shakil lying on a heap of mud beside the bush. She immediately dug up mud and found the bodies buried in the tunnel.
As she screamed for help, locals rushed to spot and recovered the bodies of the three.
Fire fighters recovered some addictive substances and cigarettes from beneath the soil.
Md Shahabuddin Khalifa, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said the bodies were handed over to the family members without autopsies following their request.
An unnatural death case was filed, he added.
