The Grameen-phone Bang-ladesh Pre-mier League witnessed its first upset when relegation-threatened Arambagh KS handed a lone-goal defeat to Muktijoddha Sangsad at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
Sabuj Kumar Biswas struck the all-important goal in the 23rd minute to take the Arambagh outfit off the foot of the table, on six points from nine matches, three clear of bottom club Feni Soccer.
Muktijoddha Sangsad remained in fourth position with 14 points from nine outings, six less than leaders Abahani and five behind Sheikh Jamal DC and Sheikh Russel KC.
The triumph for Arambagh meant they not only ended their five-match losing streak, but also exacted revenge for their 1-0 loss against Muktijoddha Sangsad in the first leg.
Muktijoddha came into this match on the back of a creditable home draw against Abahani, but were stunned by basement side Arambagh, who last defeated the All Reds in
the third edition of the professional football league in 2010.
Muktijoddha however mustered the first attack and nearly snatched the lead in the 19th minute when Brazilian striker Tyson Silva took a curling free-kick, only to be kept out by a diving effort from Arambagh goalkeeper Mitul Hasan.
Four minutes later, Arambagh took the
lead when midfielder Sabuj headed a Khaled Ahmed cross home from inside the box.
After conceding the lead, Muktijoddha stepped up the attack and yielded
a couple of scoring chances but could not avail any of those opportunities. Nigerian defender Benjamin Eleta found an Emmanuel Damy free-kick inside the box but failed to make good connection while Damy himself wasted a stoppage-time opportunity by driving miles off the target.
