Settlers to enforce hartal in hill districts today
Leaders of Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Parishad (PBCP) will enforce a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the hill districts today.
The platform of the Bangalee settlers called the hartal, demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the criminals, who gunned down a day labourer and injured two others at a brick kiln in the district on Friday.
PBCP confirmed the programme through press release yesterday afternoon, report our correspondents.
The leaders said that they decided to enforce the hartal as their 48-hour ultimatum to arrest the criminals ended without any positive note yesterday.
Condemning the incident, they said police were playing a 'mysterious role' as none of the criminals were arrested in four days into the incident.
Earlier on Monday, the same organisation formed a human chain in Shapla Chattar area of Khagrachhari town, demanding urgent steps against the culprits.
On Friday, a brick kiln labourer was shot dead and two others were hit by bullets when the alleged cadres of United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) opened fire on them for refusing to pay toll at Bhai Bhai Brick Kiln in Gazinagar area under Matiranga upazila of Khagrachhari district.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Faruk Hossain, 19, son of Mohammad Mafiz of Phulpur area of Mymensingh district.
The injured are Abul Hossain, 55, son of Bazlul Ali of Lakshmipur district and Mohammad Shajahan, 30, son of Abdur Rahman of Tabalchhari in Matiranga upazila of Khagrachhari.
Mohammad Amir Hossain, owner of the brick kiln filed a case with Matiranga police station accusing 8 to 10 unidentified people on Sunday afternoon, said officer in-charge of Matiranga police station Yousuf Mia.
