<i>Rajab Ali goes ahead as 'nothing can stop him'</i>
Businessman Rajab Ali Majnu, who earlier claimed ownership of land in the restricted area adjoining four-vent Nabaganga Regulator near Dhaka Road bus stand in Magura town, resumed earth-filling there yesterday, ignoring instructions from the local administration.
Majnu, also known as an adherent of ruling Awami League, built a tin-shed structure and started earth-filling on the land belonging to the Water Development Board (WDB) in late September of last year.
Following a petition filed by the WDB officials to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) in Magura, a team led by the ADC (Revenue) Goutam Chandra Pal and the then Magura Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Tabibur Rahman measured the land on November 5 last year and asked Rajab Ali Majnu to refrain from any construction work on the land till submission of the measurement report to settle the issue.
Contacted, sub-assistant engineer of Magura WDB Mohammad Matiur Rahman said, "According to the documents Majnu have built a tin-shed structure on the 10-decimal land owned by WDB. We are waiting for the land measurement report prepared by the team comprising the ADC and the UNO."
Meanwhile, 84 days have passed after the land measurement.
Contacted, Magura ADC Goutam Chandra Pal claimed that the land measurement report had already been submitted to the DC and it will be served to WDB authorities within shortest possible time.
WDB officials on October 1 and October 2 last year served two notices on Majnu, asking him to remove his illegal structure and stop earth filling on WDB land adjacent to Nabaganga Regulator, a key point installation (KPI) of the country.
But Majnu continued earth filling there and WDB authorities filed a case with Magura Sadar police station on October 6, accusing him of violating KPI Act that does not allow any structure within 150 metres of it.
As police did not record the case even after 17 days, Mohammad Faruk Bhuiyan, the then executive engineer of Magura WDB, submitted a petition to the deputy commissioner (DC) in Magura on October 23.
On December 13, Majnu put up a signboard on the land adjoining the regulator, claiming its ownership.
When asked, Majnu, said, "I bought the land from one Firoza Khatun and I have all the documents to claim ownership of the land."
