Two held for attempted rape
Two youths were arrested in the capital's Suhrawardy Udyan on Friday night for attempting to rape a female garment worker.
The arrestees -- Imran Hossain, 24, and Anik Islam, 23 -- are from the city's Pallabi area.
The 19-year-old victim filed a case against the duo with Shahbagh Police Station.
The girl, a resident of Kamarpara in Uttara, went to Sadarghat around 9:00pm to go to her village home in Shariatpur. Failing to catch the last launch of the night, she hired a rickshaw to go to Shahbagh, from where she would catch an Uttara-bound bus.
When she reached New Paltan of Azimpur, two motorcyclists intercepted the rickshaw. One of them got on the three-wheeler and abused her physically, brandishing a knife, says the case statement.
The other biker forced the rickshaw puller to go to Tin Netar Mazar (shrine of three leaders), from where they entered into the Suhrawardy Udyan with the girl.
Hearing her crying, some Dhaka University students came to her rescue and caught Imran and Anik.
At this point, the duo identified themselves as sub-inspectors of Lalbagh Police Station and tried to escape. But the students beat them up and handed them over to police, said Shahbagh police.
The rickshaw puller was made a witness in the case.
The two arrestees would be produced before a court today with a five-day remand prayer.
