Ensure objectivity, professionalism
Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain yesterday emphasised ensuring objectivity and professionalism in mass media to flourish and strengthen the country's democracy.
“Mass media plays a significant role in building and expressing public opinion in a democratic society. Here, the most important thing is ensuring objectivity and professionalism,†he said.
He was addressing as chief guest a discussion, “50 years of journalism studies in Bangladeshâ€, organised by Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University at Teacher-Student Centre marking its 50th founding anniversary.
“Media acts like a searchlight that brings information before the public eyes. It enriches people and helps them take correct decisions,†he said, adding that democracy could not flourish without freedom of its fourth pillar, mass media.
The Supreme Court is very much conscious to protect this freedom. The culture of closing mass media through executive order has turned into a past incident, he added.
The department Chairperson Akhter Sultana presided over the function while DU Social Science Faculty Dean Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed and DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique also spoke.
Other programmes including reception to freshmen and farewell to graduates were held.
