Hartal observed in Tangail, none filed any case yet
Neither the family members nor the partymen filed any case till 7:00pm yesterday, two days after the killing of district Awami League (AL) leader Faruque Ahmed.
This correspondent could not talk with slain leader's wife Nahar Ahmed despite repeated attempts, as she was 'yet to recover from the shock' of the incident.
Her elder son Sumon Ahmed said over cell phone that they did not file any case over the killing.
"We will file case, but where and against whom? My father had no personal enmity with anyone," he said.
"We are waiting to see what the party does," he added.
Tangail district AL organising secretary Khandakar Ashrafuzzaman Smrity, also brother-in-law of Faruque Ahmed, told this correspondent that the family could not file any case so far as his sister (Nahar) was yet to be in a situation to do that.
The AL leader also said that the family members of Faruque will sit over the matter and take a decision likely by tomorrow.
Contacted, Saleh Mohammed Tanvir, superintendent of police (SP) in Tangail, told this correspondent that though no case was lodged in this regard, police were not sitting idle.
"Police are looking into all possible reasons and motives behind the killing," the SP said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday directed the law enforcing agencies to hunt down the real killers of Faruque Ahmed, says UNB.
PM's press secretary Abul Kalam Azad said that the PM expressed profound shock at the murder of Faruque and asked the authorities concerned to put the culprits on trial.
Recalling the contributions of Faruque, the PM said his death caused an irreparable damage to the country and conveyed her deep sympathy to the bereaved family members
Meanwhile, a half-day hartal was observed in the district town yesterday, protesting the killing Faruque Ahmed.
Faruque, also a freedom fighter, was shot dead by unidentified criminals near his College Para residence in the town on Friday night.
District unit AL and its other wings on Saturday called a six-hour hartal in the town from 6:00am yesterday.
All shops and markets remained closed during the hartal hours.
There was no movement of vehicles in the town while all passenger buses remained off the roads.
The leaders and workers of Tangail district unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) brought out a procession in the morning in support of the hartal. They picketed at different intersections of the town and blocked roads by burning tires.
They also damaged vehicles at several places including Victoria Road and Kagmari areas in the town.
The BCL men also locked in clashes with the traders of Kitchen Market in Biswas Betka area in the town at noon. They also vandalised and later set several shops afire at the market.
