Bangladeshis in UK condemn Turkey's call for 'clemency'
International Crimes Strategy Forum (ICSF), a body of expatriate Bangladeshis, staged a demonstration before the Turkish embassy in London on Wednesday protesting against the Turkish government's “interference†in Bangladesh's ongoing war crimes trial process.
BBC Bangla reports that the protesters claimed that Turkish President Abdullah Gul recently sent a letter to President Zillur Rahman calling for “clemency†to the accused under trial in the International Crimes Tribunal.
The accused are being tried for crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971.
The protesters demanded that the Turkish government express regret for sending the letter and demanded an inquiry into the matter. They sent a memorandum to the embassy through police, as no embassy official met them.
The ICFS members mainly comprise representatives from some London-based cultural and political organisations.
Shepa Barua, one of the protesters, told BBC that Abdullah Gul's recent letter requesting President Zillur Rahman to forgive Ghulam Azam, former ameer of Jamaat-e Islami, was illogical and against diplomatic rules.
