Road crashes kill 9, injure 37
At least nine people were killed and 37 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Pabna, Mymensingh, Jhenidah, Satkhira and Comilla yesterday and on Tuesday night.
Our staff correspondent reports: A bus carrying staffs of the postal department overturned at Tejgaon Industrial Area in the city yesterday morning, killing the bus helper and injuring 13 staffs.
The accident took place at around 8:55am when the staffs were going to their workplace.
The helper, Mohammad Sujan, 30, who was crushed under the bus, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he died about one and a half hours later, the police said.
Eleven injured staffs, Md Abdul Gafur Hawlader, Nazrul Islam, Md Rafiq Khandakar, Md Ali Reza, Golam Mostofa, Almas Siddique, Mohammad Morsalin, Obaidul Hossain, Solaiman Chowdhury, Hossain Miah and Mohammad Alauddin, were admitted to DMCH.
Hospital and police sources said condition of most of them is critical.
The injured staffs said the bus overturned when another bus hit it from behind.
In another road accident, a restaurant owner was killed in the city's North Badda area in the early hours of yesterday.
A speeding vehicle ran over Kabir Hossain, 23, when he was returning home riding a bicycle at around 2:00am, his father Abul Hossain said.
Our Correspondent from Pabna reports: At least two people were killed when a bus hit a motorcycle at Shalgaria Bypass Road in Sadar upazila yesterday.
The dead were identified as Md Jewel, 30, son of Nur Mohammed of village Jalalpur in Sadar upazila and Md Abdul Latif, 28, son of Akbar Ali of village Balshabari in Ullapara under Sirajganj district.
Police and locals said the accident took place at around 3:00pm when a 'Meril Staff Bus' hit a motorcycle. Latif succumbed to his injuries while Jwel died in Pabna Sadar hospital.
Our correspondent from Mymensingh adds: At least one person was killed and 23 passengers were injured, two of them critically, in separate road accidents in Bhaluka and Iswarganj upazilas yesterday.
Police said tempo helper Sajib, 15, was killed and three passengers were injured when a sand-laden truck bound for Dhaka from Mymenisngh hit a tempo in the Seed Store area in Bhaluka. Sajib died on the spot.
The injured were admitted to a local hospital.
Police sent the body to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) morgue for autopsy.
Police seized the truck but the driver managed to flee the scene.
Twenty passengers were injured, two of them critically, in a road accident on Mymensingh-Kishoreganj road at Char Hossainpur in Iswarganj at around 10:30am yesterday.
The accident took place when a Mymenisngh-bound passenger bus from Brahmanbaria fell into a roadside ditch as the driver lost his control over the steering, police said.
Of the injured, 18 were rushed to Iswarganj Upazila Health Complex and two others to MMCH in critical condition.
Separate cases were lodged in this regard.
Our correspondent from Jhenidah says: Two people were killed in separate road accidents in Jessore on Tuesday night.
The accident occurred when a truck ran over an unidentified person aged about 65 at Bablatala in the town at about 12:30am. He died on the way to the hospital.
Meanwhile, another truck ran over Sujan, son of Siddique Mollah of Balia ghat village of jessore sadar upazila, at his village yesterday, leaving him dead on the spot.
The bodies have been sent to Jessore Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.
Our correspondent from Satkhira says: An old woman, who was injured in a road accident on Satkhira-Kaliganj road near Gazirhat Bazar in Debhata upazila on March 4, succumbed to her injuries at Satkhira Sadar Hospital on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Mariam Bibi, 70, wife of Mandar Ali Sardar of village Jagannathpur in Debhata upazila.
Quoting local people police said the accident took place when a motor hit Marium Bibi while she was crossing the road near Gazirhat Bazar, leaving the victim Marium Bibi injured seriously at about 11:00am.
She was taken to Satkhira Sadar Hospital in critical condition where she succumbed to her injuries at about 9:00pm, hospital sources said.
UNB from Comilla adds: A motorcyclist was killed and another injured in a road accident at Faltali in South Sadar upazila yesterday.
The dead was identified as Jahirul Islam, 24.
Police and witnesses said the accident occurred at about 9:00am when a Chouddagram-bound bus from Comilla town hit a motorcycle, leaving its rider Jahirul dead on the spot and co-rider Delu Mia injured.
Delu was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
