38 Shibir men on remand
A Dhaka court yesterday placed 38 leaders and activists of pro-Jamaat student body Islami Chhatra Shibir who were arrested in the capital on Thursday and Friday on a three-day remand.
Of them, 28 were shown arrested in a case filed with Tejgaon Police Station and the rest in another case with Jatrabari Police Station.
They were sued for vandalising and torching vehicles and preventing police from discharging duties on December 13 when BNP-led opposition's countrywide hartal was underway.
Police said most of the arrestees were unit presidents and general secretaries of Shibir's west zone in the capital.
Meanwhile, the Detective Branch of Police yesterday said Shibir activists were using stickers reading "press" on their motorbikes while launching sudden attacks on law enforcers.
They are also using those vehicles to transport anti-government books, leaflets as police usually do not intercept journalists' vehicles, it said.
The detectives extracted the information from the 38 remanded Shibir men. Yesterday, they seized five motorbikes marked with press stickers and six more activists.
A DB official told The Daily Star last night that they seized laptops from the detainees, which contained named of some activists, who were assigned to carry out subversive activities in the capital. The DB got 31 names in the laptops and has launched raids on their hideouts.
