JMB man gets 10 years' jail
A Rajshahi court yesterday sentenced an activist of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for a series of bomb blasts in Rajshahi in 2005.
The convict, Abdur Rahim alias Nasim, was also fined Tk 2,000, in default, to suffer one more year in jail.
Four other charge-sheeted accused in the case were acquitted as they were punished earlier for similar charges, said public prosecutor Entajul Haque.
Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Ekramul Haque Chowdhury delivered the verdict in presence of the accused.
On August 17, 2005, a series of bomb blasts took place in Shah Makhdum area of Rajshahi city. Sub-Inspector Inspector Gias Uddin Ahmed filed a case against some unnamed persons on May 10, 2006.
Amirul Islam, sub-inspector of Shah Makhdum Police Station, pressed charges against eight militants including top three Majlish-e Sura members of JMB in connection with the case.
JMB chief Abdur Rahman, Sura members -- Siddikul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, and Samad alias Abdul Awal -- were executed earlier.
The four militants discharged yesterday are Delwar Hossain alias Mithu, Arif alias Alal, Kamal alias Shafiullah Tarek, and Torikul Islam.
