Schools named after maryred Ffs hardly tell the tales of heroes

Moulana Kasimuddin Smrity High School at Jalalpur village in Pabna Sadar upazila, and Salim Nazir High School in Pabna town, have been named after Liberation War martyrs Moulana Kasimuddin and Md Salim Uddin respectively, inset, but the authorities hardly do anything to remind the students and locals of the supreme sacrifice of the valiant sons of the soil. The situation in 13 other educational institutions in the district, also bearing the names of Liberation War martyrs, is more or less similar.Photo: STAR

Authorities of several educational institutions in the district, named after martyred freedom fighters, hardly do anything to keep the memories of the heroic sons of the soil alive in the minds of students and locals.
In 1972, Salim Nazir High School in Pabna town was renamed so after martyred freedom fighter Md Salim Uddin, also a former student of the school.
Salim Uddin, a brilliant student of BSC in 1971, and his brother Alamgir Kabir Swapon, then a student of ISC, joined the Liberation War and received martyrdom in a front fight with the Pakistan occupation forces.
Their father Abdul Goni, then a railway officer, received martyrdom at his office on December 14 when the Pakistan occupation army killed the intellectuals.
But unfortunately the school authority does not observe any programmes in memory of the heroic sons.
Md Shamim Hossain, and Md Hridoy, both class seven students of Salim Nazir High School, said, they do not know about Salim and his role.
Talking with this correspondent, Hasina Akter Rosy, headmaster of Salim Nazir High School, said, "The school authority recalls the martyrs during the annual milad mahfil but we are unfortunate not to arrange separate programmes in their memory."
Family members of martyred freedom fighter Rafiz Uddin and his brother Afaz Uddin of Jot-Adam village in Dapunia union in Pabna Sadar upazila established Shahid Rafiz Uddin High School at the village but there is not even a photograph of the two brothers at the school.
Md Razim Uddin, headmaster of the school, said they could not arrange any programme to recall the memories of martyred freedom fighters Rafiz Uddin and Afaz Uddin due to the 'lack of support'.
Government Shahid Bulbul College was named after martyred freedom fighter Shamsul Alam Bulbul, also a former student of the college.
Shamsul Alam Bulbul, then a first year student of the college, and his friends tried to resist Pakistan occupation army at Loshkarpur in Pabna town and received martyrdom there on March, 27.
Later a large number of students of the college joined the Liberation War and 35 students of them received martyrdom in nine months' war. After independence, the government renamed the college after martyred student Shamsul Alam Bulbul and later it became a government college in 1983.
A board with names of the martyred students is hung in the college office room.
But no programme is observed to recall the martyrs as there is no government fund for the purpose, said Prof Md Eakub Ali, vice principal of the college.
Shaheed Shadhan Music College was established in 1972 in memory of martyred freedom fighter Golam Sarwar Khan Shadhan.
The working a radio artiste, Shadhon joined armed struggle against the Pakistan army and received martyrdom in Nagarbari battle on September 10, said Abdul Matin Khan, principal of the college.
During a visit to the college, this correspondent found that the photo of the martyr was lying uncared for in the storeroom while quite a few students of the college could not say anything about the role of Shadhon in Liberation War.
Aminuddin Ain College was named after advocate Md Aminuddin, then secretary of Pabna Bar Association, who was tortured to death by the Pakistan occupation army. But no photograph of the martyr was found in the college.
Of the 363 schools and colleges in nine upazilas of the district, 15 are named after martyred freedom fighters, said sources at the district education office.
