Withdraw 5 cops
A Dhaka court yesterday directed the inspector general of police (IGP) to withdraw five policemen from their posts within seven days. They are charged with violating the constitution by producing a judge before the media without a magistrate's permission.
Metropolitan Magistrate MA Salam scrutinised the written responses of the police officials to a show cause notice and passed the order. He asked the IGP to submit a report on compliance with the order within that period and also take departmental action against the police officials.
A senior assistant judge of Bhola District Judge's Court, Javed Imam was arrested on December 1 in front of the capital's Eden Women's College for allegedly carrying 342 bottles of Phensidyl.
Instead of taking him to a magistrate to make confessional statements, he was forced to talk before the media and shown arrested in a case filed against him on the day with New Market Police Station.
The officials who were involved in this are Syed Nurul Islam, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division; Mustafizur Rahman, office-in-charge of the police station, and three sub-inspectors -- Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, Shafiar Rahman and Nur Hossain.
On December 3, the same court summoned them to appear before it yesterday and justify their action.
The police officials and the accused judge were present in the court when it delivered the orders.
It also rejected a bail petition of Javed Imam. The court on December 2 rejected another bail petition filed by Javed and ordered police to send him to jail.
