MC College dormitory reconstruction begins
The government has started reconstruction of the Sylhet MC College hostel, which was bunt down in an arson attack by pro-Awami League activists this July.
The damaged structures will be rebuilt to their original shape and pattern, Finance Minister AMA Muhith told the inauguration of the reconstruction project in Sylhet city yesterday.
A total of 84 rooms in three blocks will be rebuilt while three other blocks will be repaired. The work will cost Tk 5 crore and take six months to complete.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, who also spoke at the inaugural programme, said the reconstruction would be done on an emergency basis.
A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League activists torched the hostel on July 8 following a clash with pro-Jamaat student body Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Both Muhith and Nahid said no-one of the attackers would be able to escape punishment. A high-level meeting was recently held at the home ministry to identify the culprits, they said.
An alumnus of MC College, Nahid lamented that an unwanted incident happened to the reputed institution, which, he said, was the best college in Assam during the British regime and one of the five top colleges in Pakistan era.
