Cricketer Pappon found killed at roadside
Former Bangladesh under-19 team wicketkeeper Kuntal Chandra Pappon was found dead by the Uttara-Ashulia road in Daur area yesterday.
Police recovered the body of the 28-year-old cricketer at 7:30am.
The body bore injury marks on the throat and his hands were tied behind his back with his shirt, said the OC of Turag Police Station.
Law enforcers in the evening sent the body to Dhaka Medical College morgue, where the dead was identified by his relatives. His mobile phone, shoes and money were missing.
The body was handed over to the relatives after carrying out an autopsy on it. Morgue sources said the player was strangled.
Contacted, victim's uncle Nirmol Dutta said his nephew left Dhamrai of Savar at 8:00pm on Sunday for the capital's Uttara to visit his brother.
Three hours later, Pappon's family members could not reach him on his mobile phone. Since then they looked for him to no avail.
A student of Bangladesh Krira Shiksha Protisthan (BKSP), the cricketer had represented Bangladesh at both the under-17 and under-19 levels.
He made a name for himself as a player of the country's leading sports club Abahani Limited.
Most recently he had been playing for Biman. He last played a practice match in Dhanmondi on Friday.
