UNDP happy over progress in voter registration
United Nations Resident Coordinator Renata Dessallien yesterday praised the Election Commission (EC) and the armed forces for registering 40 million voters, saying this a 'fantastic Job'.
Talking to reporters after a meeting with the foreign adviser, she hoped that the election commission would certainly be on target in completing the registration by end June or early July if 10 million voters are registered each month.
Dessallien said she informed Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury of UNDP programmes in Bangladesh and last week's joint review meeting on UN programmes in 2007 by nine international partners, and also congratulated the government for reaching the halfway mark in voters registration.
She said UN is a staunch supporter of Bangladesh and spent nearly US$ 200 million last year for various development projects including the humanitarian assistance for the victims of cyclone Sidr.
The foreign adviser said Bangladesh is turning around from the effect of the Sidr and is poised to receive foreign investment and pursue its development works.
He hoped that Bangladesh would continue to receive UN support for her ongoing development efforts.
