Russia offers help in launching
Russia has offered its support for modernising Bangladesh's power sector and launching a telecommunications satellite in the space.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the offer during a meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart Dipu Moni at the Russian foreign ministry on Friday.
The two ministers reviewed various bilateral issues between the two countries, including economic, energy and power, trade, cultural, educational and defence cooperation with special focus on cooperation in constructing a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh.
They reviewed the status of a number of proposed agreements and deals, and the issues of duty- and quota-free access of Bangladesh products to the Russian market as well as the Customs Union (comprising of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan), exchange of diplomatic properties and discussed different regional and international issues of common concern.
Dipu Moni requested her Russian counterpart for duty- and quota-free access of Bangladeshi readymade garments to the Russian market and expansion of import of seafood from Bangladesh.
The Russian foreign minister assured her of his cooperation on these issues and appreciated the revitalising role of the present government in the regional cooperation in South Asia.
Dipu Moni expressed her satisfaction over developments in the preliminary steps for the establishment of nuclear power plant, assistance of Gazprom in the oil and gas exploration sector, modernisation of old electricity generation units.
The Russian foreign minister assured his country's support for Bangladesh's bid to be the observer of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
