One held, three cases filed
Police arrested a youth on Wednesday night in connection with a series of clashes between students of Jagannath University (JnU) and Kabi Nazrul Government College in Old Dhaka that day over a trifling matter.
Three policemen were injured when the police van carrying the arrestee, Shahidul Islam Riyadh, came under attack by some 70 pro-Awami Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists of JnU unit near Sutrapur Police Station around 11:00pm, said police.
The injured first received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and were then shifted to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital.
Police said Riyadh, bodyguard of JnU unit BCL President FM Shariful Islam, was caught from before Shariful's Dholaikhal residence and a Dhaka court yesterday granted to take him on a two-day remand.
Shariful was not available for comment. Sources claimed Shariful was also detained but later released sometime afterwards. Police, however, denied the claim.
Meanwhile, three separate cases were filed by the college authority, a student of the college and police in connection with Wednesday's clashes.
The college principal filed the first case against some 400 unknown persons with Sutrapur Police Station for torching vehicles and vandalism on the campus.
The student, Nazmul Alam Nahid, accused 400 to 500 students of JnU, 27 by name, over the same charges.
Sub-inspector Shah Alam of the police station filed the third case accusing 300 to 400 unidentified people on charge of preventing policemen from discharging their duties and attacking them.
At least 30 people, including students, teachers and policemen, were injured while five cars and seven motorbikes were torched during the clashes at the college.
The principal said the attack caused the college an around Tk 2 crore loss.
Police high officials and BCL leaders of both institutions claimed that Islami Chhatra Shibir men carried out the preplanned attacks.
