AHRC seeks UN help
The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) filed a petition to the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) on Tuesday seeking its intervention in the case of disappearance of Bangladeshi national Mohammad Imam Hassan Badal.
Badal went missing eight months ago after his parents met him for the last time at the headquarters of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-2 on March 16. AHRC filed the petition on behalf of Badal's father Ruhul Amin, said a press release of the commission.
AHRC, a Hong Kong-based NGO, had issued an urgent appeal to WGEID on October 31 regarding the same case and also communicated to the authorities in Bangladesh including its prime minister seeking an intervention in the case.
Ruhul Amin had told AHRC that Rab had deliberately picked up his son regarding a silly allegation against him and demanded ransom for his release, AHRC claimed.
Contacted, Commander M Sohail, director of Rab's legal and media wing, said they could not find any evidence of Badal's disappearance after investigating into it.
He also added that Rab had submitted an investigation report to the National Human Rights Commission regarding Badal's disappearance about two months ago.
