Villagers clash with cops in Sylhet
A number of villagers snatched away a murder suspect from police after they clashed with the law enforcers at Simarbazar village in Kanaighat upazila on Saturday night, leaving three people, including two constables, injured.
The injured were constables Md Ismail and Khurshed, and villager Aminul Haque.
Ismail was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while the others took first aid.
Jaintapur police with the help of Kanaight police arrested Abdul Mutlib, of Agataluk village in Kanaighat upazila, from Simarbazar on Saturday night. When they were about to return to Jaintapur, the locals asked them why he was arrested and locked into an altercation with them.
At one stage, Mutlib's men snatched him away. Later, the clash ensued as the police attempted to catch the man again. The locals also pelted brickbats on the police.
Jaintapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Jalil told The Daily Star Mutlib was arrested in connection with Mubashwir Ali murder a month ago. Mubashwir was a resident of Sengram village.
Police filed a case with Jaintapur station accusing 200 persons on charge of snatching away the arrestee and attacking the police.
