Highlighting feminine grace
An 18-day solo painting exhibition titled “Dwitiyo Lingo” is on at Zainul Gallery, Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) of University of Dhaka. Promising painter Rakib Hasan is displaying 30 of his artworks at the exhibition.
Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, inaugurated the exhibition as chief guest on September 26. Professor Jamal Uddin Ahmed, chairperson of the Department of Drawing and Painting, FFA; Professor Hamiduzzaman Khan of Department of Sculpture, FFA; Professor Afsar Ahmed of Department of Drama and Dramatics of Jahangirnagar University and renowned art critic Moinuddin Khaled were present as special guests at the inaugural day of the exhibition.
Rakib chose large canvases and applied mixed media for his artworks, though acrylic is predominantly used in these.
Female figures are the noticeable subject of Rakib's work. The artist strives to showcase the presence of women by analysing the historical perspective. The oriental styles of painting are obvious in Rakib's works. Aesthetic lines, balanced artistic motifs and eye-catching colours are the specific traits of his paintings. “Romoni”, “Lolona”, “Bashonti”, “Bonolota”, “Kalabati”, “Niladri”, “Ekela Shokhi”, “Jiboner Chhondo”, “Pahari”, “Utshab”, “Japito Jibon” and more are the titles of Rakib's works.
In a male-dominated society, women are viewed from a male viewpoint. They are not born; rather they are made. The artist, rather with a sense of this guilt, depicts women with closed eyes -- as if he cannot look at them in the eyes.
The exhibition ended yesterday.
Rakib Hasan completed his MFA from the Department of Drawing and Painting, FFA, University of Dhaka this year. The artist participated in several group art exhibitions and art workshops held in Dhaka. He also received a scholarship provided by Shahid Abdul Malek Foundation and bagged best award twice (2002 and 2003) participating in annual art exhibition organised by FFA, Dhaka University.
