Greek unions call general strike for October 18
The two Greek trade union confederations have called a 24-hour strike for October 18 to protest against austerity measures, as EU leaders hold a summit, a union source said yesterday.
The measures are demanded by the European Union (EU), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Central Bank (ECB) as a condition for continuing financial aid.
The second such general strike in less than a month is timed to coincide with an EU summit.
The call from the confederations, one representing public service workers (Adedy) and the other private sector staff (GSSE), aims to maintain the mobilisation of a day of action undertaken on September 26.
