3 killed as rivals clash over land dispute
Three people were killed and nine others injured in clashes over land dispute in Jhenidah and Pabna yesterday and the day before.
Two of the three were killed in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah yesterday, reports our correspondent.
Police identified the dead as Moinul Haq Biswas, 35, son of Musa Biswas and Nazrul Islam, 55, son of Hatem Ali, of Ramnagar village in the upazila.
Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, officer in-charge of Jhenidah Sadar police station, said there had been a longstanding dispute between Jinnat Ali and Hatem Ali over a piece of land.
The clash ensued around 9:30am yesterday when people of Jinnat Ali went to occupy the land and were resisted by the supporters of Hatem Ali, the OC said.
Both the groups were equipped with sharp weapons and iron rods during the clash.
Moinul was stabbed during the clash and died on the spot while Nazrul succumbed to his injuries at Jessore Medical College and Hospital.
Four other injured in the clash were admitted to Kaliganj upazila health complex.
In Pabna, a man was killed and five others were injured as the two rival groups clashed over piece of disputed land at Durgapur village of Sujanagar upazila on Wednesday, reports our correspondent.
The deceased was identified as Md Abdul Jobbar, 60, of the village.
Jobbar was planting trees on the disputed land on Wednesday afternoon.
Protesting it, supporters of Akbor Hossain of the village attacked him triggering a clash.
Critically injured Jobbar was taken to Pabna Medical College Hospital where he died at night.
Officer in-charge of Sujanagar police station said that a case was filed and six people were held in connection with the incident.
