UITS students go berserk for permanent campus in Ctg
Hundreds of students of a private university run under the name of University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS) vandalised its buildings on Chittagong campus and blockaded the road for about four hours demanding its permanent campus.
They vandalised two buildings of the university--first and second floors of the main building at 40/1, Zakir Hossain Road at South Khulshi in the port city and another three-storey building near it.
According to the students, the Chittagong branch has no approval from the authorities concerned and no permanent campus for 3,500 students of its departments--Law, English, Engineering-- and BBA programme.
Failing to accommodate the students in the main building, the BBA programme has been shitted to the 2nd floor of the three-storey building that housed a restaurant on the 1st floor and a super shop on the ground floor.
When one official of the super shop, Khulsi Mart, slapped one of its BBA students around 10:30am over gossiping in the shop, the students took to the street demanding their permanent campus to avoid such attack, said Johan, a BBA student of the institution.
The students barricaded Zakir Hossain Road from 11:30am to 3:30pm.
During the agitation, staff of Khulsi Mart beat up two students who were trapped inside the building.
When contacted, officials of the university, including Abul Kashem, director of BBA programme, declined to make any comment.
