15-day ultimatum to RU authorities
Students of five female halls at Rajshahi University (RU) will attend the classes wearing black badges from today to press home their demand for security at their dormitories.
At a press conference in front of Tapasi Rabeya Hall yesterday, they demanded impartial investigation into the theft incident at the hall and exemplary punishment to guilty persons.
"The university authorities have ignored our demand and did not make its probe report public," said Monira Sharmin Prithu.
" The authorities have been given a 15-day ultimatum to fulfil our 10-point demand and we will attend our classes wearing black badges until these are met," said Borna Tarana, another agitating student of the hall.
"If the authorities fail to meet our demand within our deadline, we will set up a mass investigation commission to investigate the theft incident," they added.
"Our hall provost has threatened us to oust from the hall if we join the ongoing agitation, said Sifat-e-Zahan, a student of Rahmatunnsesa hall.
Meanwhile, the agitating female students have begun collecting mass signature from hall students in favour of their 10- point demand.
They said they will submit a memorandum along with mass signature to RU Vice-chancellor Prof Altaf Hossain and Education Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman to ensure their security in their dormitories.
Nusrat Jahan, Lili, Akhi, Abida Sultana and Farhana were present at the press conference.
On February 19, a thief sneaked into the Tapasi Rabeya Hall and stole three mobile phones, a gold chain and injured a female student.
