Hold admission tests immediately
The High Court yesterday directed the government to immediately start enrolling students in medical and dental colleges this year through admission tests instead of enrolling them on the basis of their SSC and HSC results.
On August 12, the government decided that students will be enrolled in the MBBS and BDS courses based on the SSC and HSC GPA scores instead of through admission tests.
Yesterday's direction came following an August 23 petition by a Supreme Court lawyer, Eunus Ali Akond, seeking HC directives on the government for exam based enrollment in the 2012-13 session like previous years.
Medical college admission aspirants were agitating against the government decision and demanding restoration of the admission test system.
They called off their agitation on September 2 upon the health minister's assurance that this year's enrollment would be through admission tests.
Yesterday the HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif came up with the order after hearing arguments from the petitioner and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
Earlier on September 9, Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Sazu informed the bench about the government decision.
The petition was referred to Justice Sheikh for disposal after it drew a split order from the bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddiqui and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal on August 27.
Justice Quamrul accepted the petition and ordered the government to immediately start the admission process through admission tests while Justice Ashraful rejected the petition.
The bench had then sent the petition along with the split order to the chief justice.
