BCL men assault Anwara upazila chairman
Some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists allegedly assaulted the chairman of Anwara upazila in Chittagong yesterday.
The activists forcibly ousted Anwara upazila Chairman Anwarul Islam Khan from his office in the upazila around 11:00am and locked the room, said police, quoting witnesses.
Learning about the incident, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Faruq Hossain, whose office was adjacent to the chairman's room, released Anwarul Islam from the protesters' captivity.
The protesters, consisting of BCL and Jubo League activists and other ruling party supporters, alleged that the chairman always commented derogatorily about Awami League leaders and local lawmakers, said the UNO.
BCL Chittagong district south Convener Abdul Malek Chowdhury Joni, however, told The Daily Star that, “No BCL activist was involved with the incident as there is no BCL body in Anwara upazila.”
Local people made the protest against the chairman, he added.
