Students demand compensation

Over 100 students of Government MC College in Sylhet yesterday demanded compensation for the loss they incurred when rooms of the college hostel burnt down on July 8.
They also demanded reconstruction of the hostel in its original shape, immediate release of the probe reports and exemplary punishment of the culprits who set fire to the hostel.
The principal of the college assured the students of taking necessary measures to fulfil their demands.
A plan incorporating Tk 6 crore has been prepared to reconstruct the burnt portion of the hostel, he said.
Meanwhile, the three probe committees formed to investigate the incident are yet to file their findings.
Additional District Magistrate Md Shahidul Alam, who is also convener of a probe committee, told The Daily Star that they have completed their investigation and will soon file the report.
On July 8 this year, about 200 rooms of the hostel were allegedly burnt by BCL and Jubo League activists following a clash with Shibir men. The college closed the following day for an indefinite period.
Visiting the institution, the finance minister and education minister ordered the authorities to take stern action against the culprits without considering political affiliations.
Four cases were lodged by the students and the hostel superintendent in this connection but on one has been arrested as of yet.
