Ecuador calls regional meet
Ecuador has called for a ministerial session of the South American regional bloc UNASUR in Guayaquil tomorrow after its move to grant asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, Brazil said Thursday.
A foreign ministry source said Brazil has been asked to attend the meeting of UNASUR foreign ministers, but that no decision had been made as to who would represent Brazil -- Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota or another official.
The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) groups Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Uruguay.
Ecuador granted political asylum to Assange on Thursday, triggering a diplomatic row with Britain, which angrily insisted it would extradite him to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning in a sex assault case.
