PM lost people's hearts: Fakhrul
The prime minister does not want to hold the next national election under a non-political caretaker government in fear of losing security deposit in the election as she has already lost her place in people's hearts, BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said yesterday.
Terming the present government corrupt, he said, “The World Bank cancelled funding for the Padma bridge project due to a corrupt government.”
Before launching the Padma bridge project, ministers demanded bribe to construct the bridge, he said.
The BNP leader was addressing a meeting held on Gopalpur Government Primary School premises in Thakurgaon.
Reiterating the opposition party's demand for caretaker government restoration, Mirza Alamgir said the government cannot halt the movement to restore caretaker government by filing false cases against opposition leaders and activists.
BNP will not join parliamentary elections held under any partisan administration, as fair election is not possible under a political government, he said.
“The ruling party is hatching a conspiracy to hold the next election under the grand alliance government so that it can stay in power by manipulating the polls,” he said.
To reinstate the system people should strengthen the ongoing anti-government movement, the BNP leader said.
Mirza Alamgir accused the government of violating their election pledge.
The prices of essential commodities are hiking daily and farmers are not getting fair price for their agricultural produces, he said.
Even journalists are not safe nowadays, he said, adding that many journalists were injured and killed in the tenure of the present government.
Toimur Rahman, general secretary of district unit BNP, addressed the meeting among others.
