6 cops, 359 ruling party men sued

A cousin of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal activist Monwar Hossain, one of the three victims killed in Biswanath during a BNP hartal, yesterday sued six policemen and 359 activists of the ruling Awami League and its front organisations.
Rais Ali filed the case with the Court-II of Senior Judicial Magistrate Sylhet Md Moazzem Hossain. The magistrate took the case into cognisance.
The policemen made accused in the case include OC Abul Kalam Azad, OC (investigation) Chand Miah, and two sub-inspectors and two constables of Biswanath Police Station.
Among the accused leaders are upazila AL President Mujammil Ali, General Secretary Babul Akhtar, upazila Sramik League President Sadhan Chandra Das, Krishak League Convener Sorab Ali, Swechchhasebok League General Secretary Sirajul Islam, Bangladesh Chhatra League Convener Foyzur Islam Joy, and Jubo League Convener Mokaddus Ali.
The complaint says during the April 23 hartal called in protest of disappearance of Ilias Ali, the accused beat and shot Monwar dead. The prime accused, Foyzur Islam Joy, opened the fire on Monwar, it adds.
Opposition activists Selim Ahmed, Monwar Hossain and Zakir Hossain were shot dead as hartal enforcers clashed with police and AL supporters during the countrywide hartal.
