Media restraint urged
Speakers at a commemorative meeting on late eminent litterateur Humayun Ahmed yesterday urged the media to play a positive role while reporting on the writer's family issues.
Humayun Ahmed obtained the love and respect of thousands of his admirers for his literary works. Therefore, journalists should avoid sensationalising reports and honour the noted writer and novelist, they said.
The meeting was organised by Book Publishers and Sellers Association in the capital's Aziz Multipurpose Super Market.
The speakers also urged the government to honour Humayun Ahmed with the prestigious Independence Day Award for his outstanding contribution to Bangla literature.
Meanwhile, at another commemorative meeting in a hotel in the capital, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Farkhrul Islam Alamgir urged all not to create any controversy over Humayun Ahmed.
“Humayun gave Bangla literature a different identity. With his unique writings and creations, he brought Bangla literature close to the people,” he said, adding that Humayun was the country's asset and none should do anything that might defame him.
The meeting was organised by Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha.
On the recent case filed by a lawyer blaming Humayun's wife Meher Afroz Shaon and a publishing house owner for the death, he said, “Everyone should refrain from such activities. None should defame the writer's personal life.”
