WFC, Fish Foundation sign aquaculture deal
The World Fish Centre and Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) have signed a memorandum of understanding for sustainable development of aquaculture in Bangladesh.
Under the MoU, they will work jointly to develop natural fishes and shrimp seed conservation.
Director General of World Fish Centre Stephen J Hall and BSFF Chairman Syed Mahmudul Huq signed the agreement.
The deal will play an important role for the development of the sector in a socially acceptable, environmentally sustainable and in compliance with the nationally and internationally recommended rules, regulations and practices, said the speakers at the event.
According to the Bangladesh Fishery Sector Road Map, there is a target of producing 3.54 million tonnes of fish by 2021 as part of the country's millennium development goal and out of which 57 percent is estimated to come from aquaculture, they said.
“Bangladesh will go a long way to achieving the much desired protein food security , aquatic food safety, new employment generation, poverty reduction and overall economic development of the country”, they observed.
Prime Minister's Economic Affairs Adviser Mashiur Rahman attended the event as the chief guest.
