Villagers attack school to protest 'rape' by teacher
Villagers vandalised Naogaon Government Primary School in Birganj upazila of the district yesterday protesting alleged rape of a class five student by a teacher of the school.
The protesters damaged chairs, tables and benches of the classrooms and assaulted five teachers who tried to pacify them.
Locals said an assistant teacher asked the girl to stay at her classroom after school hours and later raped her.
The girl told her parents and some classmates about the incident. As the news spread at Naogaon village yesterday morning, around 200 people gathered on the premises of the school at around 10:00pm and started vandalising the institution.
Education officer Tajul Islam told this correspondent that they would soon launch a departmental investigation into the incident and then take action against the person involved.

our Lalmonirhat correspondent adds: Patgram upazila officer of Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB), arrested on Sunday for his alleged bid to rape a college girl, was sent to jail yesterday.
Police produced the arrestee in the Court of Judicial Magistrate Saiful Islam who sent him to jail, rejecting his bail prayer.
Police said the BRDB officer tried to violate a first year student of Patgram Government College when she went to his office to see the list of ultra-poor people of her village Sunday noon.
