Chapal crowned champ

Hafizul Islam Chapal became champion of the Metropolitan Selection Chess Tournament with a game in hand when he beat Harun in the penultimate round at the Bangladesh Chess Federa-tion (BCF) hall room yesterday.
Chapal earned 7.5 points from eight games while Abdul Momin is in second place with 6.5 points from eight matches after a draw against Sirajul Kabir.
According to BCF officials, if Chapal loses and Momin wins their respective final matches today, Chapal will still be lead Momin according to the tie-breaking system, which is why Chapal was declared champion with a game to spare.
Some 15 players are tied in third position with six points each. They are Khorshed Alam, Shahjahan Kabir, Sirajul Kabir, Shamsul Kabir Chowdhury, Badrul Alam, Khairul Islam, Masum Hossain, Harunur Rashid, Jewel Khan, Ziauddin Ahmed, Shahnaz Mohammad Faruk, Nasiruddin Apu, Mukitul Islam Ripon, Hanif Mollah and Nasim Hossain Bhuiyan.
The top 16 finishers of the tournament will advance to the National Chess B-Selection round.
