Elephant kills man
A man was trampled to death while his son was injured by two wild elephants in Chittagong city early yesterday.
The victims were Mohammad Hashem, 55, and his son Joynal Abedin, 17. They hailed from Daltali village of No-1 Pukuria union in Banshkhali upazila.
Two elephants suddenly appeared from a nearby forest and attacked them before disappearing into the forest right away when Hashem and his son were working in a guava orchard around 6:00am, Md Akhter Hossain, chairman of the union, quoted Hashem's neighbours as saying.
Sabbir Iqbal, Banshkhali upazila nirbahi officer, said he had requested the local forest department to drive away the elephants, but in vain.
The chairman said an auto-rickshaw driver was killed while two others were injured in the last 12 months by wild elephants in the area.
No official from the local forest department could be reached by phone.
