RMG workers clash with cops in N'ganj
At least 30 people were injured as garment workers clashed with police yesterday over layoff in a factory in Fatullah of Narayanganj.
Quoting witnesses, police said workers of Mark Knitwear factory started agitation at the factory gate after they found a notice that announced the layoff.
They took out a procession and vandalised the gate of another factory of Motaleb Monowara Knitwear in Kotwalerbagh area.
Authorities of different garment factories announced closure for the day after the agitating workers tried to persuade the factories' employees to join the demonstration.
The violent clash ensued when police obstructed their demonstration. The protestors hurled brickbats at police prompting the law enforcers to charge baton.
At least 30 people were injured in the clash, witnesses said.
Some protesters alleged that they would be deprived of overtime pay following the layoff as their earning depends on production.
They will not be able to enjoy bonuses in the month of Ramadan, they said demanding reopening of the factory.
The workers calmed down after officials of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturer and Exporter Association (BKMEA) assured them of resolving the problem.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Fatullah Police Station Abdul Motin said police dispersed the agitating workers when they tried to make workers of other garment factories join the demonstration.
The situation is under control now, the OC said, adding that additional police has been deployed in the area to avert any untoward incident.
