Probe body fails to report in 10 days
The probe body, investigating the hostel arson at Government MC College of Sylhet, failed to submit its report to the deputy commissioner yesterday, at the end of 10 working days, though the report was almost ready for submission.
At least 42 rooms of the college hostel were gutted as those were set afire on July 8 following a clash between ruling Awami League backed Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists and Jamaat-e-Islami backed Islami Chhatra Shibir men.
The 5-member committee headed by Additional District Magistrate Md Shahidul Alam held meeting yesterday and finalised their report for submission on the scheduled day, according to Shahidul.
But, the submission had to be suspended at the last moment at the intervention by some ruling party leaders as the names of a number of the party backed students and youth bodies came up in the report, said a local Awami League leader requesting anonymity. Besides, the committee had collected clear footages of the BCL men engaged in setting the structure afire.
Contacted, the probe body chief told The Daily Star yesterday that allegations are there against many. But, things are not substantiated by sufficient evidences. That is why more time is required for a thorough check. "We may seek 10 days' extension to finish the job," he added.
