Home needs more cops to manage traffic
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is facing a tough challenge in managing traffic as it does not have adequate number of traffic police, Home Minister Shahara Khatun said yesterday.
The DMP has only around 3,2oo traffic police to manage the city's increasing traffic. Roads are also not sufficient for the soaring population and vehicles, she told a function at Rajarbagh Police Lines. The DMP hosted the event to launch a traffic awareness programme.
Drivers, commuters and pedestrians must have patience while using the roads and should help police if they want jam-free roads, she noted.
The DMP has introduced e-trafficking system on an experimental basis, said the minister, to provide vehicle owners with better services.
Addressing the function, State Minister for LGRD Jahangir Kabir Nanak said the LGRD ministry, DMP, Dhaka city corporations (North and South), Desa and Wasa should work together to cut tailbacks.
Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandaker, Local Government Secretary Abu Alam Mohammad Shahid Khan, Communications Secretary MAN Siddique, DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed and film star Ilias Kanchan were present, among others.
Earlier, the home minister led a rally and inaugurated the new website of the DMP.
