'Heavy Metal' art
An artwork by Lambert Shumbusho.
A solo art exhibition titled 'Heavy Metal' by French artist Dr. Lambert Shumbusho was inaugurated recently by the Turkish Ambassador, Vakur Ekrel at the Bengal Art Lounge in Gulshan.
Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Giorgio Guglielmino spoke on the occasion as special guest.
“We have known heavy metal in terms of music but for the first time we see it in terms of art and beauty. Common people like me will never think of turning the object into art,” said the Turkish ambassador.
In Bangladesh, Dr. Lambert discovered new artistic inspiration and developed a style of contemporary art, experimenting with a technique using different flawed mediums like soft drink cans, garbage materials, piece of iron, tin and more. Lambert went to the slums of Dhaka in search of metal cans, plates and other wastes. These metals have been burnt, crushed and compacted to make human figures. The cans have been cut and attached to the canvas with staples to give the artist's vision a new kind of shape and composition.
Dr.Lambert is a self-taught French artist. He is a lawyer by profession with a law degree from Harvard Law School. He is known mainly for his distinctive furniture which is made from fallen tree trunks, roots and branches of rare trees.
Most of the images are of women and their varied movements. The artist strives to capture the beauty of women through the materials which we usually throw away in the bins. Most of the works reveal many vibrant colours and unusual tiny as well as large forms.
The exhibition ends on July 29.
