Journos to go for tougher agitation after Eid

Leaders of six journalists' organisations yesterday threatened to launch tougher agitation programmes after Eid-ul-Fitr if police failed to arrest the killers of Sagar and Runi.
“We will declare tougher agitation programmes if the law enforcing agencies fail to arrest the killers before Eid”, they vowed at a human chain programme arranged by the journalists' organisations before the National Press Club demanding the arrest of the killers.
The journalists have been demanding the arrest and trial of the killers of journalists and a stop to repression on people working in the media following the murder of the journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi at their residence on February 10, this year.
They also criticised the roles of the government and law enforcement agencies over their inability to progress in the murder investigation five months into the incident.
The leaders warned that the journalists' organisations would also scrutinise the role of a section of journalists who have been trying to foil their programmes by supporting ATN Bangla Chairman Mahfuzur Rahman.
They termed Mahfuzur Rahman's statement seeking apology for his derogatory comments against journalists as a “trick to save himself”.
The President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, however, agreed to accept Mahfuzur's apology provided that his two television channels air the agitation programmes by the journalists and hold regular talk shows pressurizing the government to arrest the killers of Sagar and Runi.
Shawkat Mahmud, general secretary of a faction of BFUJ, urged the national human rights commission to express solidarity with the journalists, saying that journalists had no choice other than to voice their protests on the streets.
Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) presidents Abdus Shahid and Omar Faruque, its General Secretary Shaban Mahmud, Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) President Shakhawat Hossain Badsha and General Secretary of the Crime Reporters' Association of Bangladesh (CRAB), Esaraf Hossain Esa, also spoke on the occasion.
